Shift Kit C6

Post by elgemcdlf »

I am looking for recommendations on what type of shift kit to run in my C6 for street use. Think hot rod but I am column shift so I do not want a full manual conversion.

I had one installed in my C6 behind my 460 and I am not happy with it. It was intended to decreases slippage in the shifts when towing, and I assume it does that. I had one in a TH400 behind a large nailhead (back in the day) and I like the way it shifted. It was firm and it would chirp the tires when it shifted if you were giving it any amount of throttle at all. This C6 just feels funny when it shifts, it doesn't deliver the extra energy to the wheels, it makes the engine jerk when it shifts. This is a completely new installation with new engine mounts, etc. I'd prefer the original shifting over what I have now.

Go with the Transgo kit. The rest are junk.

I am waiting on my Transgo kit to be delivered. I ordered the 67 1&2 kit, myself, but am not sure which I should install because I dont know just what to expect with either stage. I had read that someone who installed the B&M kit was unsatisfied and felt that the shifts nearly resembled a stock C6. I, too, would prefer a much more solid shift.

In regards to this post...anyone have any quick tips on installing the kit? I assume I should pick up some transmission fluid before I start....any other tips?

You're going to want/need to get a new filter for it as well, other than that, have a clean work area, take your time and follow the instructions to the letter, and keep everything clean, clean, clean.

So far I have 9 1/2 qts in mine. Took it for a short run & need to recheck level. Plan on using some fluid.

A lot of people leave out the gasket that goes between the separator plate and the lower half of the valve body. This prevents shift problems down the road when the gasket splits, opening up areas for fluid to lose valve body pressure.
Below are pictures of valve body gasket failure in the trans that I rebuilt and used for my truck. I can't say what the symptoms were with this gasket failure, specific to my transmission, because I never had it in a vehicle until after I rebuilt it. I can say though that there was obvious evidence of slippage in the clutch packs.

I left the gasket out along with the small screen. I used the B&M kit & they recommended doing both.

Like Bobby said, leave out the gasket, but if you have access to a granite stone, flat sand the castings, or you can also use a 16" fine tooth flat file if you need to. BE SURE to clean the worm tracks after using either method...I don't mean just blow out the file tailings, but scrape around the edges of the tracks to remove any matter that may be left hanging over the edge from the former process'.....also it is a good idea to use a slightly larger drill bit to recess the threads a smidge as they are sometimes pulled by an over zealous former torker. The gasket usually compensates for this, but your 2 machined surfaces must fit flat together.....A Transgo kit properly installed, will give you nicer shifts when driving around town, but will firm up the shifts as you throttle harder.......Unless B&M changed their kits, you will get firm shifts at lite throttle....Have not seen any of their newer stuff....
Superior makes a decent kit also, They now own Fairbanks Racing ..formerly Fairbanks Racing Automatics owned one time by the Lupo family. They had a good kit for most trannys.........Fairbanks was a good name years back...Superior has come a LONG way..Decent kits..Donnie

Jim, go with the Tow or Go & use type F fluid....Donnie
