So I have a 94 V8 T-Bird donor car and have been seriously thinking about swapping the IRS into my 68 F100. I'm running a 460 with a 4 speed (plan on switching to a C6 soon. My 460 is torn down right now and at the machine shop and should be realistically making 400+hp when I bolt it back in. Does anyone know if my 460 is going to tear that 8.8 rear end apart? I would love to have that kind of ride in my truck but would like to still run it at the track every once in awhile.... I know alot of mustang guys ditch their IRS for a solid rear but I plan on using the truck as a daily driver as well.
Thoughts?

Re: T-Bird IRS hold up to a 460??
So far I have had no problem with the combo but the more hp I put into the 460 the more nervous I get. I have a link to beefing up the IRS. I am currently between 350 & 400 hp. For info on making the IRS tougher check here. http://www.tccoa.com/articles/mn12how-to/irs/irs.html Something I want to say is the IRS I used, it came from a 4.6 car.

The IRS out of a 4.6-equipped car is an 8.8-inch carrier... the V6 versions were the weak-kneed 7.5-in carriers.
The 8.8-inch center section is usually plenty tough depending on how it is used. A cruiser? Decent. For hardcore abuse, I recommend upgrading the input flange or changing to a 1310 or 1350 yoke, and stronger axles.

Problems are amplified by being an IRS. So many moving parts. Solid axles used in a standard 8.8 are not CV joint axle shafts. Just 1 example of the differences to watch for.

Concur. Lemme clarify. Here's a pic of the axles linked above (or half shafts if you prefer):elgemcdlf wrote:Problems are amplified by being an IRS. So many moving parts. Solid axles used in a standard 8.8 are not CV joint axle shafts. Just 1 example of the differences to watch for.

Re: T-Bird IRS hold up to a 460??
I have a link to a page on building the IRS that includes info on stronger axle shafts & CV joints. They do not give a torque rating but say they will handle up to 650hp. There is plenty that can be done to help strengthen the IRS but at the end of the day if you are drag racing a good old fashioned 9" rules the roost.
