My newly acquired '70 F 100 has a factory switch mounted on a small panel under the lower edge of the dash, to the left of the steering column. The truck also has the 25 gallon side tank inside the left frame rail and a selector valve knob on the floor. My question is, what does the dash switch do ? Is there a float for a gauge in the aux tank and the switch is to select which tank the gauge reads from ? I've begun removal of the aux tank for some weight reduction and an easier time with dual exhausts. Do some owners want these tanks and mounting hardware or are they like the spare tire carrier parts and of no value ?
This is my first truck project ever and I appologize if this is a dumb question or I'm on the wrong forum.

Re: Fuel tank switch under dash
The switch under the dash would switch between sending units so the gas gauge knew which tank to read. The floor switch actually switched the fuel flow.
The tanks are not worthless and some people would want a good one. Especially because most people are looking to get the tank out of their cab, and the tank under the truck are more desirable. The tank shroud and mounting hardware are also in some demand as some people are missing their shrouds or want it if they are adding the auxiliary tank as their new main tank. You are actually doing the opposite of what most people do, so I am sure you can find a buyer for that tank and all the mounting hardware that goes with it.
But weigh the cost and hassle of keeping and shipping it if you find a buyer. I always hate to scrap any old parts as they pretty much are not made anymore and the repops, when they are made, and of inferior quality. Of course your best bet at finding someone who might want it is to list it right here at Fordification and someone close to you might just scoop it up.

Re: Fuel tank switch under dash
Thanks Calf and Basket for your answers and thoughts. I am re-thinking the side tank removal. Maybe leave it and remove the awful in-cab tank ? The fellow who sold me the truck said the side tank had no gas gauge. ?? Can dual exhausts be routed down the right side without having to hang down to miss driveline parts or get turbo mufflers in place ? My truck is a 131 wheelbase and so has the two piece driveshaft. With that and the side tank, it's pretty full under there...
Again my appologies in advance if these questions are amateurish or dumb. I've looked through the posts and FAQ's and haven't come across the answers. I am the prime noobie on the forum just now.

Yes, the exhaust pipes can both be routed down the passenger's side of the the truck, and you can still have true duals if you like. If you are worried about having gas in the cab you can always keep the cab tank and run it dry. This would allow you to use the tank on long trips if you really need it. You would still have a tank full of fumes in the cab, but if it is punctured in an accident you would have already smashed your head against the side glass (no air bags). I have two tanks and I run one almost empty and then I switch to the other tank that is full. At that point I start looking for a good time to fill the empty tank.

I'd be interested in any mounting parts or the tank if you go that route. I'd need to make sure it is compatible with a '67 first before you go to any trouble. Mine was removed some time ago by the original owner....

Re: Fuel tank switch under dash
I went with the in cab tank and got rid of the tank underneath......still have the switch in dash and I want to remove it as well.
Took a quick look at the back of the switch and man there are alot of dang wires !!!!! ???????
So,if I take out the switch, and obviously want my gas gauge to continue working....what do I do with the wires(i.e. splice or cap off or ?????

Re: Fuel tank switch under dash
The only two your really have to worry about would be the one coming down the A pillar and the one that goes to the gauge, they need to be connected. I don't remember the color of the one going to the gauge, but it is probably orange like the one coming down the A pillar. Or, do you have more than three wires going to the switch??? The later models do (post 1972), but the other wires are for the electronic gas tank selector and yours probably wouldn't have those. Just curious, how many wires do you have plugged into the back of the switch?

Re: Fuel tank switch under dash
I went out to my shop and found my extra fuel gauge switch with wires attached. There are six wires coming out of the back of the switch, but only three are used, three are covered with tape and do not exit the loom, this is from the factory. There are two green and one orange from the switch and they connect to three orange wires. Of the orange wires, one comes down the A pillar and has red female end, that comes from your cab tank. There is one orange wire with a red male end and one with a yellow male end, the red male end I believe goes to your gas gauge. The wire with the yellow male end would have gone to the sending unit of your extra tank. I don't think you will short anything out if this is incorrect, your gauge just won't work. So my suggestion is to unplug it all and connect the two orange wires with the red connectors. Let me know if this works for you.
