Can Tails On C6 Transmissions be Swapped?

Post by colnago »

I have a C6 with a long tail currently in the truck. I have a second C6 that I was thinking of rebuilding, but it has a short tail. Can I rebuild it, then take the long tail from the truck, and put it on (instead of the short tail), or would I have to do other things to make it work?

Thanks,

Joseph

I had the short 72 tail housing from my original C-6 put on a later transmission when I put the 460 in my F-250. I did that so I would not have to modify driveshafts, it worked fine. I think you have to disassemble the tranny to make the swap, I had a shop do mine. So, yes you can swap them around.

Kurt is correct, the tailshaft can be swapped, but it is the last item to be pulled & it comes out thru the FRONT...not difficult as you do not have to fool with the clutch drums, valve body or gear train...Well,you do have to R & R these parts, but you don't have to disassemble them.
Depends on your mech. skills level.....Are you going to DIY ? or have it done ?.........Donnie

Donnie,

No, I'm planning to DIY. No sweat equity, no learning. I was hoping to rebuild the "spare" C6, then swap in the long tailshaft at the last minute. Sounds like I have to take the best of each tranny, and rebuild one with both on the bench. Sounds fun! Maybe I can find a THIRD C6 on craigslist, so I don't have to pull the tranny out of the truck to make this happen. Ugh!

I love my truck I love my truck I love my truck ...
