72 F250 4x4 Tire Fitment

Post by jlycans »

Got a 72 F250 4X4. It sits nose down pretty bad. From my measurements it looks like I can put 38's on the back. I can install extended bumpstops if I need to. The stock rear springs are in great shape. Skyjacker's website claims you can fit 38's with their 2" kit. I was thinking about purchasing that kit for the front only. I'll be running narrow stock steel wheels and if I go with 38's they will be 38.5x11 Boggers. If not, Q78 (about 36x11) Swampers. Also need input on addressing the steering if need be. If someone knows about this please respond. Thanks

Nobody knows? Question about the steering most important.

Are you employing a sawzall to the fenders or? 35-36" fits well with 4" springs IMO. 35's fit at stock height, but not well.

The stock steering will probably be fine with 2" lift springs. 4" is too much angle, you need a raised steering arm or crossover.

38's are a lot of tire for a 44 front, especially the light duty one that most of these trucks had.

Thanks for the response averagef250. From my experience with lifting rangers, samurais, jeeps, etc., you can always fit a larger tire than what lift companies recommend. That was the reason for my question with regards to skyjacker's claims. I would take a sawzall to my leg before I would this truck. That would be wrong on so many levels. I'm only using this truck to drive occasionally and for firewood. No offroad abuse or mud holes or anything. I'll be using narrow wheels and tires, so with that in mind if you have anything to add. Thanks again

That's still a lot of tire. I guess I'd have to see 2" highboy lift springs with 38's to believe it.

Right now with 16.5x10 wheels and 31x10.50's I have 3.5 inches to the front of the wheelwell. Most people don't realize when you measure for tire clearance you split the difference, not saying your one of those people. So theoretically I can fit a 38" tire now and it will rub. Add 2" (if it truly adds 2") it should be ok. As the suspension compresses the tire should also move slightly rearward. Daystar makes extended bumpstops that should bolt right up or with only slight modification. I have tons of room in the rear. If it clears by a 32nd it might as well be a mile, ha ha. BTW is that a samurai @ Attica in your profile pic?

I guess it's worth a try, but that sure seams like cutting it close to me.

The picture is a '73 Bronco inside a culvert pipe in the Mount Hood National Forest.

Thanks for the pics CrypticRacer13. That's about the stance I'm looking for, but much narrower wheels and tires. I guess you are rubbing on the fender itself? If the tires are completely in the wheel well it should make a big difference. I've been looking at STA Superlugs 9.00-16's (36.3x10.4). They are $260 ea. and made in the USA. Know of anyone running these? Also info on availability of other 9.00-16's would be appreciated. Looks to be slim pickin's even with military tire suppliers.

Yes i rub the rear portion of the fenders but not enough to damage them. being that the truck is manual steering its the least of my worries pulling into lots

I recently put factory stock 16" split rims with the STA Superlug 9.00-16 tires on my 72 f250 yellow flare side four by four. They look great and clear in front
lock to lock with some room to spare. Ride is decent. I'll post a few pics. shortly.
