3-point seat belt opinions/experiences

Post by snake »

Just looking for opinions and/or experiences with aftermarket 3-point seat belts for my '67 - good or bad.

I want to purchase a set soon to get installed for spring/summer.

Thanks

Good..

You will want to buy from Seatbelt Pros which many of us have bought from here. Great company and good quality product. And you will want to get one of these 2 sets:

or

Get it in 140 inch length and get the 20 inch fixed buckle if you are running a bench seat, or the 12 inch sleeve if you are running bucket seats. You wont be disappointed and very easy to install. They will send you color samples of whatever you request as well so you can match it to your interior.

I got mine in December, they are well worth the cost and are very well made seat belts. I got the retro ones,

Be sure and order the hardware kit, they are only $5.95 each and much easier than trying to make your own.

Are the pull buckle styles as safe as the push button style.

Also, why couldn't we just use belts from a 80s or 90s truck?

I'm sure you can make any seat belt work, but in my case I had done a complete truck restoration and everything else in and on the truck was new so I was not going to use older looking used seat belts in my truck.

I completely understand about your truck. Was just wondering if there were any used options out there.

Yeah, you could probably go with used belts if you wanted. But $150 for a brand new complete setup is not bad. I would just wonder about the unknown in a used belt. Has it been in a wreck before and gotten stretched? Will it hold up if you happen to get in a wreck? I just felt better about getting new belts for safety reasons, and I was also in the same boat that I am doing a complete restoration. So I went with new for looks as well.

As for your question about the pull latch as opposed to the button, they are both as good as each other. It is just a matter or preference. I went with the pull latch for the more retro look, but the button push was the style our trucks came with from the factory. So either way works.

Really? Mine have the pull-latch style, and I always thought that those were the original. Black plastic, by the way, not chrome, and you pull up on the tab side of the belt (the side opposite the side you get with the SeatBeltPros latch). A real PITA to latch, too! But a lot can change in 45+ years, so maybe the original belts found a new home elsewhere ...

I have two 67s and one has the button type (Ranger CS) while the other has the pull latch type as described above. I thought maybe the pull latch style were added (after market) but i haven't checked. They should have a tag with the Ford logo if they are from the factory - but they still could be from a different year...

I have only seen the push button as stock in our trucks. Check the labels for FoMoCo and see, but I have pulled parts from a bunch of different bumps and they have all had push button belts. I could be wrong, but I have never seen stock pull latchs.

You learn something new every day! I have literally looked at the seatbelts in 50+ bumps here in SoCal when I was looking for green belts for my 72 (before buying from seatbelt pros). I was going to the various junkyards and checking out the belts in the cabs and I have only seen the push button belts. But if those are FoMoCo belts, then I would suspect that they are stock. I wonder if they put different belts in the trucks depending on which plant they were assembled at?

I went used for my three point belts. Found them in a Pick A Part out of late model Econoline vans. One is presently installed, the drivers side, and I've got two more to do both passenger side and middle and have not put them in yet. One cost me 15 dollars, and the other two were bought on a half off day, so I've got a total of 30 dollars in parts. (trying not to spend a lot on this build) Here's a pic of the install of the drivers side.
seatbelts.jpg
It works well, and if I stop fast it locks up.

My wife worked in a seatbelt factory in the early 70's, the company was American Safety. She recalls that by that point they were all push button style being made. It was amusing how she could tell me exactly how my trucks original belts were constructed. :)

I installed four of them in my crew. They work great. I bought new ones with the push button buckle. I have a set of the pull latch style in my '55 they are a little difficult for kids to buckle but they get it.
