Easy question - Is this a C4?

Post by flyboy71 »

Casting indicates "D2AP 7006 EA" The tailshaft housing is short compared to what the shop manual shows and what Ive seen online. VIN tag indicated trans code "G" I pulled it from my 72 longbed with a 302.

Looks like a C4...but there was also a C3 and a C5. Is the pan more or less square? If so, probably so.

I'm calling mine a C4 and it looks just like it. I've checked every casting number and every marking on it and researched. Everything points to a C4. Came out of a mixed up parts truck so I'm not sure what it's originally from. I like this site. http://mmerlinn.com/

Yeah the code on the case crosses to a C4 and it sure does look like one. The head scratcher is that every pic Ive seen, including the views in the 72 shop manual I have show the long tail shaft housing.

Next time Ill think to drain the thing before I pull it. I yanked it and the engine out and lost a few quarts thru the speedo hole. Then after I pulled it from the engine and yanked the torque converter a couple more quarts dumped from that too. I was scrambling for kitty litter in a hurry. What a mess.

Don't feel bad, I did the EXACT same thing. But I was pulling mine out of a parts truck without even a front clip on it. Should have been an easy, clean pull so I didn't even have any kitty litter around. Fortunately, my wife buys paper towels in bulk :nono:

Oh mine was down to the bare frame, no front clip, no cab, just the bed. Even with the leveler on the engine the whole thing is pointed skyward and then you gotta drag the tranny up and over the engine mounts. I did all this solo and in a hurry before the storms rolled in. Oh and my driveway slopes too so while I was scrambling back to chase the mess with litter the cherry picker was creeping down the drive. The only thing stopping it was when it hung up on something. Some video would have been good. A helper would have been better. Oh and then when I finally got it down to ground level to pull the tranny the engine decided to puke its remaining antifreeze all over my driveway. Ive had an easier time helping someone the morning after a hangover with similar issues minus the kitty litter.

i've had more than a few massive ATF/antifreeze lakes covering my garage floor myself ,the blend of the two becomes some kind of super lubricant - the best thing about the absorb-all was that i could walk around on the concrete floor without wiping out

FWIW, there were two versions of c4's made for trucks. A long tailshaft for shortbeds, one piece drive shaft. And a short tail shaft for long beds with a
two piece driveshaft. I just rebuilt a long shaft, fixing to do a shortie
for my '71 lwb.

Hey guys,

I hate to steal the thread, but I was hoping that somebody could post a picture of where the tab on the dipstick tube mounts. I can just BARELY see it in the pics posted above. I have the pan fill C4 with 240 where the PO had crushed the dipstick tube and cooler lines. I picked up a perfect dipstick tube out of a junkyard C4, but the tab doesn't seem to want to line up to anything on the bellhousing.

Thanks a lot.

The C5 is basically a C4 with a lock up converter; E.G.------The external difference is the depth of the bell housing & the size of the converter.
Borg Warner built the converter for the C5----it was a major disaster, they tried using a passive ( no hydraulic controls) design which was a series of clutches that expanded when a certain speed was reached..........like a chain saw clutch....It was a POS.....Don't use one..
We used to leave the clutch plate out & advise the customer that he may get a mile per gallon less on a trip, but the converter was now going to last a long time.......Ford finally scrapped the idea.........There were about a dozen sections to the clutch plate & when one would hang either in or out the dash would shake so bad that the glove box door would open........ .Donnie

Easy answer. Yes.

To be more specific, it is a pan-fill C4 (originally known as a C5 before Ford replaced the C4 with a converter clutch POS C5) that fits a 1970 or 1971 truck (two wheel if it has a speedo or four wheel if there is no speedo).

Judging from your numbers, it looks like someone in the past hodge-podged one together, so I would be leery of identifying it with the numbers.

I looked at the converter in the bucket again, it is hard to tell w/o measurements...C4 or C5 ///the C4 was used in MANY applications & for many years... & there were MANY variations of it, both in dia., stall speed & height...Also 2 diff. input shaft diameters..But a C4 behind a V8 never measured over 6" in total height when standing on the hub & measuring to the pad at the flywheel mounting surface..
C5's were around from about '82 to mid '86....ALL C5 converter's used in V8's were almost 13 inches in Dia.& the hub to pad measurement was
over 6 1/2 inches tall.......You can check this with a ruler, you do not need a height gage
If you need a definite measurement.........post back...................Donnie
