Quick hijack, hope you don't mind.

I'm planning to set my 69 up to tow a horse trailer and maybe the occassional deck over.

I plan to make a crew cab, box the frame, and have f250 axles ready to go. I know the full floater rear 60 and 8 lug 44 front have better brakes.

Do you guys feel this upgrade will be sufficient to two in the up to 10k range? (horses will be about 4-5k total and the max I would do would be a possible 10k on the deckover, anymore I'll use the diesel unless its down)

This is the 69 F-100 in your sig?

I would go out and say that the F-100 frame is just too puny. Even boxing it in isn't going to add the strength where you need especially considering adding a couple feet to the length for the crewcab. For about the same work you could just build a new frame from rect tube. 2.5"X8"x .180 wall or thereabouts would be better than a new truck frame. Considering the frame rails are parallel it's work, but probably about the same as doing a good job boxing the whole thing.

I think with the right parts (absolutely no F-100 stuff in the suspension)and solid planning towing 10K is a non-issue for these trucks. A highboy with disc brakes does a fine job pulling that.

Yes sir thats the 69

Awesome thanks. I was thinking about it last night and I think I've come to the conclusion that I will put the 69 and 71 frame together. I know a lot of people don't like welding old steel to old steel but properly executed it will not be an issue. The truck is probably going to end up heavy but strength is my goal.

Did the highboys have better brakes than the "run of the mill" 250's? I know my axles came from a 3/4 ton truck but I may try to swap out the 8 lug 44 for a 60 and run one ton springs. (of course having to redesign the suspension and steering to function properly and be safe)
