Fordman, you wrote this:
the first thing is check the fuild level while it is running. if it only shifts hard while shifting between first and second replace the modulator. the third thing to check is to make sure the vacuum hose on the modulator is good and the other end of the tube where it hooks onto the engine is good also. then it maybe time to rebuild it after that or possibly adjust the bands.

removing the transmission isn't hard if you have afloor jack. rebuilding it you will need a spring compressor for the drums to r and r the rubber seals in the pistons in those drums. i have never been able to take a vavle body apart and put it back together and have it work right or at all so i usually just clean it and put it back in.

Lots of good info, but I underlined the stuff that I had never herd of before. :hmm:

Nikon

what you could do to find out what those terms mean would be to either get a Haynes manual for your transmission at a parts store or check out your local library for mitchell manuals.

They are the same books used by professional mechanics.

Actually, Spartman, I have a set of shop manuals coming to me from an auction I won, but they haven't made it here yet. I can't wait to get them!

the modulator sits on the rear of the transmission and is held on with a clip and a bolt it is suppose to have a rubber hose going to it. there are two drums inside of the transmission one is for forward and the second is for reverse. once you remove the snap ring and take out the discs (clutches) there is an spring in there that will have to be compressed to get the rest of the drum apart that part is called the piston. the vavle body sits in the pan of the transmission and it can be removed. while the trans is still in the truck if you just want to remove it only. and not the entire transmission. somewhere on the outside of the transmission is a sutd looking thing with a nut on it that can be loosed so you can adjust the bands that go around the drums inside the transmission. i don't know how many turns it is suppose to be though to adjustthe bands. i think in will tighten the band and out will loosen it.

Get a Transgo shift kit. There's more info in in the box than you might
use. Get a filter, pan gasket, and some ATF. Get a new modulator and
some vac. hose to fit it. Read the instructions in the shift kit till you feel
comfortable with working on the valve body. It's not that hard. Follow
what it says to do, and you just might be surprized when you get done.
As long as your tranny is not wasted, it will probably work. If you pull the
pan and it's full of glitter, it's overhaul time. If the pan on the bottom is
fairly clean then it's a good sign. A little dirt is normal. Metal flakes are
a bad sign. If it stinks that's a sign it's got burnt. If it's toast, post and I'll
help if you like. KP

Seriously though that's sound advice from Brother Jake11 I thnk that he's of sound mind.

I was checking them out today on their web site. One is for towing so it is not supposed to shift too hard.

There are two different types of modulators.
One type screws into the case and the other is held by a clip and a hold down bolt, much like the distributor.

Beatup, like I tried to say, he might be surprized, how good it can work.
AS long as the bands and clutches are holding up. TransGo is better than
B&M. IMO 8)
