Fuel gauge problems

The fuel gauge in my '67 doesn't read accurately- the gauge level drops at about twice the rate as the actual fuel level. Anyone had that problem before?

I'll probably pull the sender out and see if anything looks a-miss at some point but thought i'd check here for tips first.

I just fixed this problem in my 72 last week and my 70 about a month ago.Ironic how it happened to both trucks,but it did.For me,I was getting the same exact symptoms that you described you are having.I pulled the instrument cluster and checked the regulator on back of cluster and it was fine.I next moved to pulling the fuel sending unit.There was the culprit in both trucks.I guess from age or our crappy fuel we have these days with so much ethanol in it,the floats somehow developed a hairline crack in both of them,either by corrosion from fuel or something else that I cant figure out.Anyways,I pulled out both floats and replaced them with the new float design that Dennis Carpenter sells.They are far more superior than our factory units and the price is cheaper than going to a diner for breakfast and leaving a tip.lolllll.What was happening,the floats were taking on gas thru the hairline cracks and weighing down the floats and giving me all kinds of way off readings.As the fuel level decreased and I would make turns,the fuel sloshing around would empty out the float a little bit and then refill the float a little bit when the fuel slosh calmed down.It was driving me crazy.Hopefully this is what your problem is.By the way,when I went into the back of the cluster,I also ordered a new regulator to replace the factory unit,I didn't have to,but they aint that expensive and how often do we pull our clusters out anyway.Good luck

sNAKE,how did you make out with your gauge issue? Just curious,did you have a hairline cracked float?

I didn't find any crack and it didn't appear to be partially 'loaded' with gas but changing out the entire sending unit (I had one in another tank that has been removed) seems to have resolved the problem. However, I just recently changed that out and I haven't re-filled the tank since changing doing that.

Excellent.Glad to hear you most likey resolved your problem.Theres just something about these 67-72 Ford trucks,aint there? They are some of the most beautiful vehicles ever produced.Good Luck with your wheels,Snake
