Hi, D4 only means that part was introduced into the line in that year....D=7 4 is the first year of production. To the best of my knowledge Ford didn't have a model 400.........General Motors did.........Show us a complete photo & we can tell you what you have............Donnie

I think there are 3 bell housings for the C6 and several variations.

The FE, Series 335/385 (351m, 400, 429, and 460), and the small block (inline, 351c, 351w, 302, 289). The 351m and 400 were a variation of the 351c. Do an internet search for more details.

The cruise-a-matic to AOD were continuous development of the same design. Each was built for a specific purpose, some weaker, some stronger.

The (mx-hd in 1967) FMX can be rebuilt but upgrades are limited. The C6 is better for modifications. It all depends what you are trying to do and your budget.

http://www.fordification.com/tech/transID-auto.htm The Fordification site does a good job of summarizing the transmissions.

another thing you can try is pull the pan and get the filter or screen number and ask the auto parts store what application it fits. kinda like reverse dissection....should be able to give you a application at least.

There should be a tag attached to one of the extension bolts....that info will narrow down your search...they are not a difficult trans to build, they just use a diff. geartrain that the C4 & C6......That trans has been in use since the 1950's, various version's of it are still using the Ravigneaux complex gear train...harder to repair than the C4 & C6 which use a Simpson gear train...E.G.. 2 separate planetary gear sets..on those units you can replace either 1 or the other planetary if 1 is faulty..where with the French gear set things get more complicated....Not a bad trans, but it would be my 3rd choice of the 3 speed's......donnie :2cents:

Yes, the Iron case units actually bolted from the rear, where as the C4 bolted from inside the bell......Donnie
