Steering Wheel assembly

Post by la1031 »

OK got a problem.

I have a re-poped steering wheel from LMC. When I tighten the nut down it just compresses the spring until the wheel bottoms out on the column ring. Is it a bad steering wheel, column ring, or a spacer missing???

I also have a horn honking problem as it honks when I turn. I think that is just the turn signal cancel tab hitting the horn button though.

And its on my 68' F100 BTW

You need to adjust the column tube's position relative to the steering shaft.

Loosen the clamp securing the column to the dash.
Pop the hood and loosen the clamp around the column holding it to the firewall plate.
Go back into the cab and adjust (slide up and down) the tube relative to the shaft. Aim for about 1/8-inch between the steering wheel hub and the tube.
Back under the hood, ensure that you have not stretched or pulled the shaft away from the rag joint.. it should not have any wavyness.
Tighten everything down.

Btw, it's easier doing this procedure with a helper.
