Tranny dilema.....

Post by tazzman68 »

Ok, here is the jist... I have a 67 2wd, with the Heavy Duty H2O cooled MX 3 speed auto in it. Well if you yhave ever seen the way the water piping is ran to the heat exchanger, then you know that when I installed my headers, everything is really tight. Well tonight, when I parked her in the driveway, the coolant hose that goes into the heat exchanger ruptured, spilling everything in the driveway.
So, what I really wanna do, is get rid of this stinkin tranny, I hate it, it doesnt even go into gear till the truck reaches operating temp, and also has no slip while sitting at a light.
What I would like to know, is if the C6 is a direct swap. As if in, are the output shafts the same spline config, are the tranny's the same length, will I need to modify anything else? Any help in this situation would be greeatly appreciated.

you got a 302 in that, Ed? I've got a c-4 and an fmx (i think) sitting here if you can use one of them.

I wish I had a 302 in her, but no, I have a 352 FE in her. I sure do appreciate the offer though. I have a 4sp manual for it when I get a small block.

I don't know about a direct bolt in swap, but if you find a C6 that bolts up to your FE that needs a flat bolt up yoke on the front of the drive shaft, I've got that part of the drive shaft, with the carrier bearing, to mate up to the rear peice. :D

I'm guessing here, but I imagine the crossmember would probably be the same, if not needing to be moved forwards or backwards some, and if not, I've got the crossmember too. Hrrmmm.... come to think of it, I've got the C6 in the `74 that bolts up to an FE as well, along with the driveline for it. And the kickdown rod. and the tranny cooler that goes up front by the radiator (and the lines for it). 8) Cheap!

Seriously, though, if I can help you figure it out, cool. If you need some parts to make it happen, maybe I can help with that as well.

I DO know they used a couple different tranny tailshafts, depending on usage. Some had a shorter, cast iron tailshaft, with either a bolt up yoke for a u-joint, or the aforementioned flat yoke. They also had a longhsaft tranny that had a slip-in yoke. Then there's the 4x4 trannies, which I know next to nothing about.

Might be able to hook you up with some pics, if nothing else.

actually the 4x4 c6 trannies have a short tailshaft and the 2wd have long tailshafts.

I've seen 2 F100's, one a `72 and the other a `71, that both had the short shaft trannies in them. I bought the C6 out of the `72, along with the inline tank that now belongs to Keith, and the crossmember and driveline (front half, which I still have, along with other miscellaneous parts) as I had intended to put them into another truck I had at the time. Ended up parting it out, though, and the tranny is sitting at my brother-in-laws place (unless he's since sold it)

Who knows, they may have been swapped in at some time.

It's really hard to say. Ford did a lot of things, for apparently little or no reason, back then, so anything is possible. Then again, a lot of years have passed since the trucks were new, so again it's hard to say what's been done to them.
