3 on a tree not going back to neutral...
The 67 f110 I picked up is having issues shifting. The two shift arms in the photo, the front one generally does not go back to neutral (unless you climb under the hood and do it by hand)… seems I have only seen it down. I *think* that is the 2nd and 3rd arm. A buddy told me to adjust the arms to the transmission, but I am wondering if it is more a sign of wear inside the column where it just doesn't catch and bring the control arm back to neutral. Any ideas? Thanks.

For more info:
The forward one is R and 1st. (figured that out). Put them in neutral, started it up, put it in reverse to leave my driveway, then in first to go for a spin around the block. All that was good, I shifted to second, and couldn't get it back to first. When I pulled back in, the forward level was part way down.

Most likely a sheared or badly worn shift tab ( http://www.fordification.com/tech/3spd-column_01.htm ). My truck had the exact same issue. I moved my shifter to the floor. Here is a pic for you...

Your spring appears to be overly compressed. It's job is to maintain constant pressure on the shift tube to assist in the tab on the bottom aligning with the slots in the levers. Check on the pic showing a new one on page 2 of this thread http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... a&start=15 I'm on my phone or I'd just post the pic here. Speaking of, how do your levers look? Are the slots sharply defined?

Re: 3 on a tree not going back to neutral...
Slots as in where the levers go in and the shaft goes through? I haven't pulled those parts out. But I did order new spacers because for a few bucks it can't hurt to replace them, and the thick middle one is probably worn.. I can move it a bit while it's in place. So I think I'll just pull the whole column to replace everything and clean it up and paint like in the thread you pointed to. Thanks for the info.

Re: 3 on a tree not going back to neutral...
I ordered the spacers, new bushings for the levers, a new shift collar and some other bits, so next chance I get I can pull the whole thing and clean up, and rebuild when parts come.

Re: 3 on a tree not going back to neutral...
Ok, trying to pull the column, and wondering how the steering shaft attaches to the flange that is on the rag gear… is that just a one piece thing, flange and shaft? Do I detach the rag gear and pull the shaft out from the engine compartment?
I was looking at the part diagram and they don't even show the rag gear… and can't seem to find much info via google.

Re: 3 on a tree not going back to neutral...
Nevermind on the last question, just unbolted the rag gear and found out yes the flange is part of the shaft, or at least pressed on. Pulled the whole column to clean it up and rebuild when parts get here.
Found that one of the spacers was beyond worn… see photo of the two spacers that should be the same..

That would definitely cause issues.

Re: 3 on a tree not going back to neutral...
Yeah, I figured that might be a problem.
I cleaned up the column, sanded it down.. there was quite a bit of pitting down where the firewall bracket holds onto it. I got it as best I could then used some of that rust converter on the pitting… will prime and paint when that is cured.
