Identify my toploader please!

Post by CommrclDiver »

The guy I bought this from says it came out of a fairlane. He claims that it is a 4 speed but I can't seem to find the code online. Can anyone help me ID it? Whats really got me stumped is the shifter location. All the toploaders I've seen have linkage on the outside of the case and this ones shifter linkage goes through the tail shaft and the rear of the case. Heres the pics:

Ewww. First, it's not a Toploader!...It's the imposter referred to as a T170.... the code is "RUG" and also referred to as an SROD - shift rail over drive. EOxx means "1980".

I understand there's a big gear drop between 2nd and 3rd or something like that. It's not a performance-oriented transmission but okay for light duty behind a 300 or 302.

:yt: It's an aluminum cased overdrive tranny known as an SROD. It may have been in a Fairlane, but it sure wasn't original to the Fairlane!

I have found a little more info on it but from what I see I still can't place it. I am 99.99% positive that it is a Ford "T&C" RUG from a 1980's passenger car. What gets me is that the "T&C" RUG only had the 4 bolt butterfly bolt patteren while the toploadeds had the 8 bolt patteren. My case has an 8 bolt patteren like the toploaders but the case is aluminum and has the bulge at the bottom so it has to be the "T&C" RUG. I guess the thing I'm really trying to find out is what's the right rebuild kit I need?

Your trans is the SROD (Single Rail Over Drive) which I believe is the T-170FS, so you would need the kit for that trans. You do not have a TOD (a.k.a. RTS) and you do not have a SMOD (it's Cast Iron). :) I Hope This Helps.
