late model tranny swap

Post by 69BUMPF100 »

hello im new to the site i have a 69 ford f100 with a 240 six +offy, four barrel and split headers. i found that some of the 87 to 96 ford f150s had a combination of a 300 six and a five speed tranny i was wondering if there would be any troubles with placing that tranny on an older engine like my 240 six. the block being the same between the 240 and 300. from what i have found regarding it it seems like a good and easy swap but i haven't ever heard of anyone doing it is there something that im missing.

the tranny you are talking about is a M5R2 made by mazda and put in 89-96 F150's. They have an integral bellhousing which matches the ford 'cleveland' style bellhousing, ie. 302 and 300/240-6

it has been discussed a lot on here. the clutch is hydraulic so you need to modify the pedal and linkage for a hyd. master cylinder on the firewall... other than that everything bolts up.

still not crystal on the clutch thing, but i've heard the old clutch works and the late model clutch might have complications.

oh yeah driveshaft output yoke is different, so you gotta sort that out too.

thank you i hadn't found anything that at first looked at doing the swap outright moreso burried in a build so thanks i shouldnt have any problems then. i ran across another post somewhere that was just a swap over to a hyd clutch what they had to do was use the late model pedals and do a small amount of fab work to use the newer stuff.

I have posted a couple of pics in this topic about modding the pedal:

Let me know if you have any questions about the swap.

I wouldn't do that swap on a bet, after owning a '95 F150 with that trans behind a 4.9L six, fuel injected of course.

Bought that particular truck as a low mileage, one owner, pampered truck. Within a year, discovered that that trans is one of a series of weak links in 'newer' Ford trucks.

What did I do to abuse that truck? Dump run, hauling a very small utility trailer; camping trip, towing a fifteen hundred pound trailer; and the final straw was just driving on the interstate, and I shifted into fifth. Detonated the transmission. Bought a used one, switched it, drove it around the block, and put it up for sale. Once rebuilt by a pro-shop, second and third times by me, under the watchful eye of an expert.

DONE with those sh*tty Japanese transmissions. Replaced the truck with a '94 F150 extended cab, auto trans, 302.
too many Fords, no where near 'nuff time.

or, money.

Was the tranny full of fluid when this happened? I have 1500 miles on mine already, check the fluid often, and i have had no trouble with mine, but i haven't used it for any towing but there has been a 500+ pounds of feed in the bed. I agree with you that they aren't the best transmission but i didn't feel like coughing up the cash for a TKO, and i wanted the overdrive or i would have just left the t18 in it.

Yes. Fluid was fine. I think they're a fine "car" transmission, but as far as a truck you expect to do much with, forget it. My opinion, of course. Three strikes, done.

I have over 5,000 miles on the M5od behind the Cummins 4BT in my 7,500lb Crewcab Highboy much of that towing a 3,000lb trailer in the Sierras and on trails and so far it is serving well.
It was a pick-ur-part core that I overhauled and at this point I think that most M5od's that die are either killed from being flogged or run low on lube for too long. Many of the F-150's that
came with that trans had a GVWR and towing load rating equal to Bump F-250's,I dont beat by M5 but the load I put it under is quit heavy the 4BT I am running is about 175hp and 400ft/lbs and that is at 1800 rpm. I cant speak for all M5OD's but properly assembled and kept full of fluid I think they should hold up in most D/D or work Bump's at least 1/2 or 3/4 ton.
If mine fails Y'all will be among the first to know
