Update: Have installed new main and rod bearings, they all looked good but cheap insurance and know they are all properly torqued. Next will b a little more cleaning of crevices on the block. Found some issues with the head and going to replace it with a fresh loaded one and save this one for machining and o-ringing later down the road. Then a coat of cummins titanium black paint and a few dress-up goodies.
Also finally finished making payment to a buddy of mine for his 911 p-pump that was recently freshened up.
Hopefully make some decent progress in the next couple weeks.
Not too much. Finishing clean up on a few things to bolt back on b4 paint. Waiting on the new head, hopefully b4 this weekend. Cam is stuffed back in there.
Received the ford ZF6 to Cummins adapter and spacer from Diesel Adapters last week, quality products.
Still haven't painted, still cleaning and sandblasting odds and ends. But.......the new head finally showed up! Unwrapped that bad boy and swapped in a set of PAC brake 60lb int and ex springs and threw it on the block. Slowly but surely we will get to running again.
Got it all cleaned up and shot it with cummins titanium black. Still waiting on my accent color for some of the other parts. Bolted in the freeze plugs and Steadily moving forward, hope you guys r enjoying the pics.
All I keep thinking to myself when I look at all of these cummins swaps is "Someday"... But I haven't even got my truck back home yet and have yet to put it back together with my rebuilt 460.
"Someday" is a big word around my house also. Haha but the wait pays off in the end. I remember when I had my crew down the the bare frame and thought there was no end in sight but eventually it all works out. What's stopping you from getting your crew home?
Just a few final items need paint and it will be all done. it is 98% done now. I told them to take their time (as they have been) as I am going out of state for the holidays anyway and wont be back till Jan 7th. So I would rather it stay there till then anyway.
Been getting a couple things done and still trying to plan ahead on a few things so work done is not counterproductive.
Finally got almost everything painted on the engine.
Hoisted engine off the stand and bolted the zf6 finding out my coolant bypass can not be used in this conversion without quite a bit of hassle.
Next few are just of it hanging in the bay and situating it in the best spot possible.
After it was where we wanted it we mocked up the tabs needed for the engine mounts and had my other friend cut them on his plasma table. The frame plates came from John at Autofab cut, bent and drilled for the highboy frame. Working on these right now.
Just a quick look at where my transmission crossmember needs to go I was thinking the cage radius arm brackets would b close. Sure enough as fate would have it they will be incorporated into each other. That ends up good I guess, I wanted to build a crossmember between the 2 mounts but really didn't want to mess with any of the suspension upgrades yet. Can't win them all.
Hopefully get a bit of progress done on minimal funds but tons of time due to some unexpected time off work.
Does your Cummins still have the factory block heater? If not I would install one in one of those freeze plug element heaters in one of the freeze plug holes. We do have some really cold nights in the here in the desert.
Yes the block heater is still in there behind the oil filter housing. Nobody likes a cold heater in the morning .
Finished welding up the mounts today and installed them! The gusset is on top so the engine can be lowered to remove the trans if needed. Otherwise it wouldn't be possible due to it being so close to the firewall it would have no room to slide back off the input shaft. This way the mount plates will have to be removed to pull the engine but small price to pay for the convenience on the other end. I will probably add a bolt and sleeve between the ears on the lower side just to stiffen it up a little more.
Trans crossmember is finished and incorporated the mounting plates into the Cage radius arm frame mounts int the same mounting holes. Still have to weld the plug on the end.
Picked up some king 2.5 12in stroke coilovers for the front end.
Still contemplating a few ways I want to build the upper mounts so I figured buying a set of dimple dies might come in pretty handy along with a HD finger brake kit for the harbor freight 20 ton press from Swag off-road.
Also picked up the lower coilover axle mounts from blue torch fab, save some time there.
Last but not least we snagged a 91 f250 sterling 10.25 to replace the rear Dana 60 and matching springs. Score is it has 3.55's to match my d60 front and I already have most of the parts to throw disk brakes on it. Plan is to do a rear shackle flip when adding the new 3in hangers and gain a 4.5in lift without blocks or an add a leaf life is in there now. Smoother ride hopefully with less axle wrap and maybe no traction bars.
