Wires on C6

Post by Brew Dog »

Hi,

Could someone tell me what the cut wires near the linkage on my C6 automatic transmission are for. I have a 71 F100 which came modified and has a 460 in it with the C6. Previous owner didn't have much info and thought the engine and transmission were out of a 1985 Ford camper. Also, any way of finding out exactly what year engine and tranny are from. I see no tags anywhere. Thanks for all your information. This website and forum have been absolutely awesome!!

Thanks,

Ron

Paging Bobbyford... Bobby should have all the info you could want on both the 460 and the C6. Hopefully he sees this and pops in here (he probably will). If not and you dont get the answer you need, send him a PM and ask him. He will definitely know and is more than happy to share his knowledge.

The wires are coming out of the NSS (Neutral Safety Swith). Two of the wires should be for the neutral safety switch and two of them should be for the backup lights. You should be able to determine which pair of wires are for the NSS and which pair are for the backup lights with an Ohm meter.

Thanks Ultra Ranger. My back up lights do not work so that makes sense. However, I can only start my truck in park. if the NSS is not hooked up, shouldn't it start in gear or neutral?

Thanks

I'm not certain what year the NSS was mounted to the side of the transmissions on the Ford F-series trucks (1978 possibly ??) but, if you cannot start the truck out of park then that pretty much tells me that your '71's stock NSS is hooked up and is evidently located in the same place as it is in my '69 F-100 Ranger --under the dash, on top of the steering column tube, down near the inside of the firewall.

If your NSS works but the backup lights don't, it may just be a simple matter of the backup light bulbs being burned out.

The NSS wires on the '71 switch should be orange with a blue stripe. The backup light wires should be black with a red stripe.

The NSS was mounted on the column up through '77, and on the transmission from '78-on.
