Rear end help

Post by Fordguy85 »

ok so I cracked open the rear diff on my 72 F250 tonight to replace the seal and I have a few questions hopefully you guys can help , this is the first time I have had the rear end opened up on here , I have no clue what the gear ratio is in this truck everything says 3.73 but when I marked the tire and drive shaft and turned it the drive shaft only went around 2 times for one whole tire revolution so hopefully you guys can help me with this

First is this a posi rear end ???

next do the numbers in the pics mean anything to anyone ??

It is not a "posi" or limited slip differential, just a single drive carrier. Can't determine anything from the numbers. Since you've already got it cracked open, count the teeth on the ring gear and the teeth on the pinion. You'll just be able to see the teeth on the pinion gear under those "spider" gears at the very rear top/bottom, in the back. Divide the ring gear tooth count by the pinion gear tooth count to get the gear ratio.

I can. The numbers 41-11 designates the gear set . Divide 41 by 11 and you get 3.73..... ta-dah!
