Trans swap advice

Post by cwy »

I'm looking to get some of your opinions on doing a trans swap on my '68 F-100. It currently has the 3.03 , 3 speed column shift. It's in need of a clutch so I'm going to be removing it regardless. It needs a new synchronizer in 2nd gear, so probably a rebuild (I've found a rebuild kit for about $100). I also have a '72 F-350 dump that I'm thinking about parting out. It's got the same engine as my '68 (360) and a 4 speed granny low trans. Just trying to decide which way to go with this and thought some of you opinions, pro and con, might help.
Thanks

I rebuilt mine about 15 years ago. Bought a rebuild kit that had all bearings, blocker rings and syncros. Wasn't bad if you know how to remove snap rings and keep needle bearing in place when you reassemble it. Grease is your friend here. You might want to get a shop manual for any clearances that need checking and to see how it goes together.

Or, if your not comfortable with the rebuild process on the 3 speed. And not worried about originality, consider the 4 speed swap. Might improve your top end. Just make sure you use 4 speed bell housing and check drive shaft and speedo cable length.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but. I also have the 3.03 trans looking at my options and the top gear ratio is the same as granny and auto trans . If you put a granny in your truck or c-6 you will need the higher center hump the granny will give you that extra low pulling gear and is internal shifted so no outside linkage to fight with...just my 2 cents...
Oh drive line is 1 inch longer for granny not sure about c-6

You do not need the taller center hump to put a C6 in

You just can not pull the trans out with out pulling the engine

I have a 390 and C6 in my 67 with the short hump

True, just makes things tighter.

Hahaha..... he means most thieves don't know how to operate a column-shift rig.

Go ahead Mancar, ask a 20- or 30-something year-old guy if he has ever driven or is knowledgeable of column-shifted cars and trucks.

Kinda like the old comedy piece about Ralph Bennett's Volkswagen Car. Seems the new owner (circa 1960) and his friends couldn't find reverse - 'Ralph hunted it, I hunted it, D A hunted it'

Then, they were stopped by the police . . . Officer said, 'There ain't no tag on whatever this is you're drivin'

Ralph replied, 'There also ain't no reverse, no radiator, no heater and I'm glad we won the war!'

WWII that is.

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in garages. (Apologies to Kenneth Grahame.)
