3 on the tree hard to shift and clutch

Post by cghstrojan08 »

Getting a 68 F100 with 3 on the tree. Seems like when you come to a stop, its hard to get it to shift back to first. Like you got to work it back and forth and really jam it in. Also, you have to let the clutch pedal out almost all the way before it engages. Is that just an adjustment or the clutch shot?

Are the cab mounts rusty? If so, the cab may have settled affecting the clutch and transmission shift rods adjustment. Also can affect steering if severe rot / settling.

If it was just a shifting problem I would lean toward potential issues with the steering column. However, since you have the problem with the pedal travel, I think you're clutch needs replacing. Do you know if it's ever been replaced before or how long ago?

The 3 speed was always a little finicky about going into first from a dead stop. I had to engage clutch slightly so the gears would align. You can try adjusting the play out of it first to see if that helps before replacing it.

I got a chance to look at the column. It's shot. Sticking up half an inch. Also the rag joint is destroyed. Looks like I will be rebuilding the column. Just need to get a weekend off to get the truck up to my house.
