1970 250 Front axle swap
I haven't been able to find a straight forward answer so I figured I would ask here. I have a 1970 F250 and I would like to convert the front to disc brakes but my year has the closed knuckle design. I haven't found any brackets or kits to do convert. What are my options for axle swaps with little fabrication I wouldn't mind stepping up to a Dana 60 either so please include those suggestions. I am primarily looking for information on what years would have an open knuckle 60 or 44 with disc's already. thanks for the help.

Hi,
The way I understand it, any Dana 44 from a 1976 - 1979 (these will have disk brakes and open knuckles) F250 should just about be a direct bolt in. You will also need the brake proportioning valve for the disk brake system. I'm not sure about the Dana 60's.
Take care,
Lee

Re: 1970 250 Front axle swap
Thanks Lee that's great info, does anyone know of any Dana 60 front options? As far as disc brake conversions for the Dana 60 rear goes, ruff stuff makes a bolt on caliper bracket and sells them for 50 bucks only issue i see is the loss of the E-break. has anyone here done a transfer case brake modification? If so are there pictures and perhaps a write up?
Thanks
Randy
Thanks
Randy

For the 60 you would be looking for 78/79 for direct bolt in, and why not a hydraulic rated ball valve for an ebrake.

Re: 1970 250 Front axle swap
Randy,
I am converting all the way around on my 70 F250 4x4 to discs. I am using a D44 up front, the only relatively direct bolt in would be a low pinion disc brake D44 from a 1976-1977.5 F250. I know very little about a D60 upfront, I'm sure there are people who will tell you always go bigger, but in my opinion the Dana 44 has worked for many years and performed true. You can get a rear disc conversion from Blackbirds custom trucks out of spokane with an Ebrake system available.

I have a 79 dana 60 and a gm 14 bolt both with disc brakes,in a 1972 f 250 4x4,brakes work great, but i have no e brakke. its the 4 speed so i put the truck in 1st or reverse when parked. depends on how u drive and what size tire if you need the 60.Even with 60 have still broken kuncles, axles, one ring and pinion, running 40 inch tires.488s with detroit locker, if u play hard find a 60 if not the 44 open knuccle should be fine
