What is the going cost for a C4 Rebuilt/installed?

My 72 F100 with the C4 transmission has the so called morning sickness (no drive until fully heated up) for the past few years, and now it's at it's end of life.

So I called a few auto repair shops and had stopped by a transmissions rebuilding only shop.
Wow I'm in shock on the quoted cost to rebuild my C4 / replace converter / and re-install.

What would / or did you pay to have a C4 rebuilt, replace the converter, re-installed in today's world ?

Well I'm going through the same thing (morning sickness) with my 69 which has a non-original C6. I've got a bunch of quotes. They range from $800 to $1,300. The bulk of them are in the $850 to $950 range. Not sure how the C6 and C4 compare, but I would think the work and parts should be about the same. What kind if quotes are you looking at?

I dunno what labor prices are for transmission removal and installation. Broader Performance http://www.broaderperformance.com/9-ford-c4- sells a rebuilt C4 for about $1200, and a basic convertor for $550. I have no affiliation with Broader, but I bought a C6 rebuild kit last spring and they have excellent customer service. The above link is for comparison.

Got a high quote of $2,500 ....... yikes that made me laugh and cry all at the same time. Guess they really didn't want the job.

Getting it done for 1000 so I guess I'm in the ball park with that. Good lord wish I was back in the 50's when the going cost was 200/300.

I just completed by first R&R in my c6...rebuilder did it for $625, I did the pull and install, manual tools and a Harbor Freight tranny jack for $90. $50 fluid, and I sprung for a fresh rebuilt starter while I had it out anyway, another $40. Quotes I got for complete 'in and out' was typically $2200, with one guy at $2K even, which was the lowest. I had only spent $3K on the truck 20 years ago, so I decided I was most comfortable doing it myself and done right.

edit: forgot some details, bought new 3/8 flange nuts and threadlock (torque converter, I destroyed 2 of the 4 nuts with a chisel) about $8, and I had to cut one of the cooler lines (front) so needed a 5/16 patch brake line with a coupler, another $11.

when I did the rebuild on my c-4 the parts alone totaled near $800.00. That includes the cost of a converter (275.00) and a deep sump pan and shift kit.

Some trans shops will NOT replace frictions and steels that look O K, they save money that way. Your not able to look over their shoulder so how will you know?

C-4, c-6 not really that difficult to do on your work bench and no real "special" tools required.

Cleanliness is the key. You need to get it hot tanked somewhere or pressure wash the crap out of it.
