4 speed manual trans
Ive got a 68 ford f100 that originally had a 240 i6, the truck has the original 4 speed trans and i plan on keeping it. This last weekend i bought a beautifully running 351w with a 2bbl carb out of a 78 Thunderbird for $300..the Thunderbird had an automatic transmission. Now I'm wondering what do i need to bolt this 4 speed up to the 351w? my understanding is the bell housing is the same and should bolt up to the 351w but what do i need for a fly wheel? will take all the help i can get! Thanks!

Idk the details of that specific combo but I would say flywheel, new pilot bearing, inspection cover, driveshaft. Also, the 351w might not be equipped with a bellcrank/z-bar mount. Might have to source a bolt on. I THINK you can use the same flywheel as a 302. Be sure and check the counterweight balance.

Re: 4 speed manual trans
I think Sarge is right, should just be a flywheel, and I think (but not positive) it's a 164 tooth 302 fly wheel.........you may want to google SBF flywheels for help.

From the notes of Fordification:
Severe engine damage will result if you use the wrong flywheel or damper on your small-block engine. While all 289/351W/351C engines use a flywheel and damper with a 28-oz imbalance factor, in '81 all 302s changed from the 28 oz. imbalance with a 157-tooth flywheel to 50 oz. imbalance with 164-teeth flywheel and a 34-oz damper. (NOTE: Some early 289s came with a 160-tooth flywheel/flexplate.) In addition, the redesigned 302 block had it's oil dipstick moved from the pan to the side of the block and these engines now used a one-piece rear main seal. The '81-newer small-blocks also used a cable clutch instead of a mechanical linkage, so these blocks do not have the pivot point for the older mechanical clutch linkage. Total Performance sells a bracket for this purpose, but they're not difficult to fabricate.

Re: 4 speed manual trans
So "Madman" what fly wheel do i need if the 351w came out of a 1978 ford Thunderbird? I'm obviously switching from the 240i6 to the 351w so will i need a new clutch also or will my old one fit?

Re: 4 speed manual trans
I don't know if it will or wont fit, but I'd sure play it safe and get a new clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing regardless.......while the engine is out is the best time to replace them.....much easier access and you can see what you are doing without dislocating some random body part to get a good view!

Re: 4 speed manual trans
Or look at it as "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Think of the time and frustration if you used the old one, drove for a month, then it crapped out and you had to pull all that crap again! Is it worth another $100 to prevent that?
