I guess "difficulty" is relative. It's not difficult to take the ring gear off the open (single track) differential and swap the gear over onto the Traction-Lok differential but, there are important tolerances that have to be set up along with the need of some specialty tools and the knowledge of how to set and adjust everything when reassembling.

I'd say it is a lot easier (and more convenient) on a 9 inch since it has the removable carrier than the traditional Dana set. Just pluck out the pumpkin and work on it right on the bench!

You have to check/set your backlash and tooth engagement pattern. In a perfect world, everything should line up like it was before it came apart, but we don't live in a perfect world....

I have set up a 8.8 rear in a mustang before & had over 100,000 on it when i got rid of it . The pinion want be removed like you said in a perfect world it shouhd drop in and have same tolerence.
