Three Point Seatbelts

Post by hmills »

Hmmm - just had a thought (only one per year so I've used it up already  ). Anyway - has anyone ever been pulled over because he's not wearing a shoulder belt and had to explain to the officer that "my truck only has lapbelts"?

I doubt anyone's gonna hassle you with a truck this old, especially if you just tell them it didn't even come from the factory so-equipped. (well, not as standard equipment, anyway).

My dad got harassed one morning to the point he had to get out and show the pig the layout of a lapbelt. Was pretty funny because he was a younger cop and my dad was beeing a little of a smarta$$.

Sometime during the 80's the govt. decided it was ok to set up roadblocks for any damn reason they want. The last one I went through a few months ago was a click-it-or-ticket roadblock/seatbelt check campaign.
And the cop was yelling into my truck "did I have my lapbelt fastened?"

I may get to see soon if that happens to me, as of right now in Mississippi an Officer can give you a ticket for not wearing one but cannot pull you over for that alone but the state is fixing to change that rule so basically if an Officer sees you driving and no shoulder belt he can pull you over for it. Might become a hassle but I doubt I would get a ticket afterwards.

Since a lot of the newer cops weren't even born when these trucks were made, it's entirely likely that some might not be aware that you aren't required to install shoulder belts on trucks not equipped as such from the factory. I know each state is a little different, and it's possible things have changed in certain areas in regards to that. If you can research seatbelt laws on your state's DMV website and find the statute that specifically says your truck is exempt from having shoulder belts, it might be a good idea to print that page out and just keep it in the glovebox, just in case. ;)

Hey, Keith, remember when they passed teh seatbelt law here in Ne.?
It was supposed to be only a secondary offense. Now they can pull you over for it.
They must have figured they could make more money........

I think the federal govt. pretty much dictates the seat belt issues now, as they will blackmail the states by withholding their highway money if the states dont follow the Fed. dictate.
