Has anyone put an overdrive transmission on a 390?
I have just purchased a 67 Mercury (that's a Canadian Ford ) Custom Cab. The Engine is Rebuilt to 400 hp and has a fmx transmission in it.
I don't think this will stand up and would like to put a heavier transmission in and get better mileage on highway.
Suggestions please?
Cant seem to attach pictures as too large.

Re: 390 and overdrive
I am rolling with a T85 with R11 overdrive in my 69 Bump with a 390. Old school to say the least but I love cruising with old world technology that worked. I can cruise on the highway doing 65-70 with everyone else and it turns no RPMs. With the overdrive on my ride which is a bone stock rebuild translate into 3-4 mpg on the highway if I am easy on the gas.

3-4 mpg? My '69 F-250 T85-OD gets 17-18 mpg on mostly level terrain highways at 70mph. It's an FE 410 2bbl with RV cam, 4.08 bore x 3.98 stroke, with 3.54 Dana 60 TorqueLoc, P235-75R16LTs. Why is yours getting such poor gas mileage?cowbay wrote:I am rolling with a T85 with R11 overdrive in my 69 Bump with a 390. I think cowbay meant that his truck saw a 3-4 mpg increase with that drive train combination.farmallmta wrote:3-4 mpg? My '69 F-250 T85-OD gets 17-18 mpg on mostly level terrain highways at 70mph. I'm not on the road yet but my 390 has a NV4500 bolted to it.
