c6 front pump
I've got a '72 bump with a 390 I completely rebuilt, in my haste I managed to bolt the transmission to the block without the tc bolts coming through the flexplate. I realized my mistake when I went to tighten down the tc nuts and there were no studs. long story short I got back together correctly but at first start up made a slight whining noise, I found a tc nut that wasn't as tight as it should have been so I tightened it, now no whining but sounds like the flexplate is banging on something. I guess my question is if I f***** up the shaft the tc runs on how hard is replacing the front pump. I already have a new plate but I'd hate to pull that c6 for the forth time cause it wasn't the flexplate but the shaft in the pump. please guys I need some input, im already behind schedule and over budget

Re: c6 front pump
The pump doesn't run off of the shaft, it runs off of the flats on the torque converter. I know you can bust front pump and/or case if you don't get those set into the pump before tightening down. Don't know if the same thing can happen with the flex plate pushing on the converter bolts. Nothing hard about replacing the front pump, but you have to pull tranny to get to it. Don't understand why the knocking sound came after tightening the nuts. I've heard a knocking sound when they are loose, but not tight. I also have never heard a whine from loose TC bolts.

Re: c6 front pump
Replacing the pump isn't hard, you can get one from broader performance.
I'd suspect pump damage if you had the converter pushed in by the studs.
Just having a mismatch in the flex plate and converter can waste a pump (I'd rather not get into how I know this)

Re: c6 front pump
thanks for the responses, I also had to pull the motor with the tc attached to the block and was told that in itself could damage the pump. I have the old flexplate off so im gonna put the new one on and see if that makes a difference, if not pull the trans again and I guess replace the front pump. is it possible I bent the imput shaft also? the reason I ask is because when I was under the truck while it was running the flexplate had a little wobble to it which would probably explain the banging noise I was hearing. thanks for all your help, there seems to be one delay after another with this rebuild.

Re: c6 front pump
I think im gonna bolt the new flexplate right to the tq, spin in it a little at a time and take measurments to see if theres still a wobble before I put everything back together and find out theres still a wobble. good news is its not leaking from the front I don't know if that has anything to do with the pump or not

Re: c6 front pump
You probably bent the flex plate when the studs were misaligned.
I would be surprised if you bent the input shaft.

Re: c6 front pump
thanks that makes me feel a little better. I wrecked my bike Thursday night, slid about thirty feet and ended up in the ditch so I've been recouping from my injuries since. now im down one truck and one motorcycle so as soon as my hand heals up a little better i'll be back at it. lets hope your right.

Wow... thats not good news...
Hope you heal up pretty quick, even minor motorcycle accidents can be quite a recouping period...

Re: c6 front pump
you were correct duckryder just a bent flexplate, put it on and ran great until I tore up my radiator with my fan but that's another subject
