79 Bronco high pinion Dana 44 in 72 F100?

Post by stink bear »

Hello,
I'm in the process of buying a 79 Bronco parts truck for upgrades to my 72 F100 short bed 4X4. The first upgrade I would like to do is the tranny and t-case, at some point later I would like to swap both axles.
My question is this: Will the high pinion Dana 44 work in my truck? I'm concerned about drive shaft clearance and possibly the track bar. (I believe my front axle is a low pinion but I'm at an undisclosed location in southwest Asia at present and can not look at my truck).
Any tips / info relating to this would be appreciated.

It'll bolt in , use the diagonal track bar and tie rods from the '79.

you should have a high pinion.

Put new polyurethane bushings in too.

It's been 20 years since I did mine ,I don't remember if I used the original pitman arm or the "79. :hmm:

I later put in power steering , a big improvement.

Power steering is one of the things I hope to get out of this, I'm guessing the Bronco will have it.
My primary purpose of the swap is getting power disc brakes. The new axles will have 3.55 gears in it as well, mine has 4.11's (240 and single speed t-case). I think the 3.55's will be good with the NP205 and the right engine.
The next question will be what is the right engine? I'm considering a 300-6, a 302, or a 351W. I'll probably start another thread soon for that discussion .
