68 ford pickup

Post by ClassicAmeriGun84 »

hi, new forum user here needing advice. A old friend offered to sell me his 68 ford ranger? One thing I'm concerned about is that he changed out the three on the tree with a regular gear shifter. Is this done a lot? Is this an area for concern? I guess it does decrease the collectibility of the truck since it's not original. Price he gave me is $800. Truck has solid frame , minor rust, no leaks as far as I can tell, tires are crap, I think it has either a 360 or 390 (how can I be sure?) has missing emblems, all hubcaps, interior good (lots of snake skins) minus radio, no battery, mint green.
Is this a buy or avoid? I was going to most likely buy it to resell for small profit after I clean it up and get it running. Any recommendations?

Yes I recommend that U tell me where it is so I can buy it. Just kidding around. Do U mean the shifter has been moved to the floor? If a good job was done of it all should be ok.
Yes sounds like a good buy.

At a clandestine locale deep in the woods of North Carolina 8) Actually I've already got the check in the mail, have a gut feeling it will be ok. It didn't strike me as too big of an investment anyways!

What about the motor displacement? Is there any way to tell from stamping on the block etc?

None of the casting marks will tell you the displacement, you'll have to measure the stroke or if it's the original engine you can tell from the vin. http://www.fordification.com/tech/VIN68.htm

Ok thanks for that tidbit of info, I'll check it out tomorrow and take some pics. Are photos allowed in this forum? The seller didn't even know the engine size, it was a gift from his gramps, who obviously cared a lot more about it than he ever did. It's being used as
A trash dump! Pretty solid as far as I can see though so...just hoping the swap of the three on the tree to the floor was done by a competent mechanic. We'll see tomorrow what some fresh gas, ether, new battery and some air in the tires will do!
