All,
I have a '67 F250 Camper Special with a B4 axle code. The Tech section says that this is a locking rear Dana 60 with a 4.10 gear ratio, and a capacity of 5.2M. I'm not sure what the 5.2M means. Does anyone know if the "M" is pints/quarts/other? From reading, I take it that the stock gear oil is 80W-90. Is this what everyone is using?
Thanks,
Joseph

Re: Capacity of Rear Differential?
I believe that refers to the weight capacity of the axle. 5,200 pounds. It doesn't indicate the oil capacity.

Re: Capacity of Rear Differential?
Ah, that makes sense. Now back to the real question: does anyone know the amount of gear oil I need, and should I use 75W - 90 or 80W - 90, or does it matter?
Thanks for the clarification!

Re: Capacity of Rear Differential?
After putzing around on Google, it looks like I need 6.4 quarts for a Dana 60 rear. Now I just have to research what weight oil to use, and if I need any additives.
Thanks,
Joseph

6.4 quarts or 6.4 pints? A truck shop manual will tell you this information.colnago wrote:After putzing around on Google, it looks like I need 6.4 quarts for a Dana 60 rear. Now I just have to research what weight oil to use, and if I need any additives.

If you have a factory Traction-Lok differential, you'll need 4oz of friction modifier. You can get a bottle from your local Ford place. It's p/n XL-3 FIR No. 135454. It's about $7.00 dollars a bottle.
Pour the friction modifier in first then pour the gear oil in until it just starts to run out of the fill plug hole.
I use GL-5 80W-90 gear oil in the 9-inch rear end under my truck with a 31-spline Traction-Lok differential. The 9-inch in my truck takes 5 pints of gear oil. That's all of two bottles and half of another so, it requires getting three bottles of gear oil.

Re: Capacity of Rear Differential?
80W90 or if towing/hauling regularly consider 75W140.
Additive only if equipped with a limited slip differential.
