HELP!! EFI Swap into non EFI truck
I am wondering if anyone has ever installed a EFI 289/302 out of a donor car, into a non EFI car? I am restoring/modifying a 1967 Ford F-100 short bed. I have a donor 1987 Crown Victoria with an EFI 5.0 and an AOD. I want to take the drive train and install it in the truck. The issue I am having is that my father-in-law and I have never worked with fuel injection systems before and was wondering if someone could give us some pointers and maybe point us in the right direction of any resources that would help? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide. http://f100build.wix.com/f100build <~~~~Visit the build site!!

Re: HELP!! EFI Swap into non EFI truck
The 289 was phased out of production (1968) long before Ford started fuel injecting the 302 (1986 in the Mustangs).
The Crown Vic 5.0L will be a non-High Output (H.O.) 5.0L engine. It will have the 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 firing order of the 289/older 302 engines. The H.O. 5.0L engines will have the better 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 firing order, like the 351 Windsors.
The Crown Vic 5.0L engine will most likely be Speed Density instead of Mass Air engine control. Speed Density isn't very receptive to head, cam, intake or exhaust changes, --if you plan to hop the engine up. A Speed Density engine can be changed to Mass Air but, a Mass Air 5.0L H.O. engine would be a better foundation to start with.
It's not a hard swap to do but, if you know little-to-nothing about this subject, you'll have lots of reading and studying to do first to be able to accomplish this swap.
Some swap information from some Bronco sites. While they are Bronco sites, the basics remains the same regardless of what the vehicle is the EFI engine is being put into.

Spamming the forum is a great way to piss off the mods so the other threads were deleted and this one moved to the most relevant section. I built my username in '96 and it's still going strong. Crown Vic 302 is garbage, possibly the worst performing 302. AOD choice is a close 2nd. Pick a 5.0 out of a truck or stang with the E7 heads and decent intake. CV intake has tiny ports, TB and I think it was stuck with the crap E6 heads too. It's been a while.
There is an absolute ton of good info out there for the swap. My speed density '88 mustang setup required (i think) 11 wires spliced in or ran to connect the '88 EFI harness to the '68 Ranchero harness. Add in a return style fuel system and weld some o2 bungs in the headers and it was on the road. First couple months had the stand fuel tank in the bed and the fuel lines ran over the roof.

Re: HELP!! EFI Swap into non EFI truck
First time poster, didn't realize I was "spamming," and I suppose I still don't, nontheless I apologize. Thank you for the information. I understand the cv 5.0 isn't the greatest quality - it wouldn't have been my first or tenth choice but it's what the budget allows for. It's a strong running engine that will allow me to get my truck back out on the road where it belongs. In the mean time maybe I can tuck a few pennies away for something more suiting. Thank you for the information, and if you happen to think of anything else I'm always happy to learn.

I'd be all over Craigslist for a set of GT40 heads and a decent intake setup or even a junker 5.0 stang to part out. You are just limiting yourself so much with that intake setup. I think they also ran the white 14lb injectors and low-po tune in the processor. The stang used a larger throttle body, intake with larger ports, 19lb injectors and a decent tune. Plus it's really easy to upgrade to mass air and then cams etc. can come out to play. I did a buddies stock dented up '86 cougar that turned into a '88 turbo coupe with a 5.0 5 speed, A trim Vortech, Edelbrock heads and polished cobra intake. The painted cobra on my car is from one of his 'upgrades'. Basically he started with that same engine as you and had to spend a ton of extra money to keep upgrading things.
My '68 is speed density with 1.72 roller rockers, the cobra intake and the emissions bumps ground off the exhaust ports. It really runs well and is a lot of fun to drive. Typical mileage is around 18mpg. I took it off the road when I put my Cummins truck on and miss it a lot.

You said that your "speed density '88 mustang setup required (i think) 11 wires spliced in or ran to connect the '88 EFI harness to the '68 Ranchero harness." Do you remember what wires were needed to do the swap? I suppose that this is my main questions. What wires are needed and what aren't. I would imagine that 99% of the harness coming from the 87 CV wont need to be run anywhere. Thanks again for any help you can provide.

Re: HELP!! EFI Swap into non EFI truck
not a hard swap youll need engine/injector harness and ecm from cv as well as the engine and your fuel cut off switch for roll overs is optional but recommended theirs alot of info of broken down steps and details was gonna do the same swap found a 45000 donor car same year and everything as far as being lower power output you can always change the heads to at least e7s their very cheap to find also a facrory upper from a high output engine will net some power on that cv engine and if you want more swap for a factory high output cam and change your ecm to a mass air i think computer cod a3m is one 9f them for the autos and youll need a mass air meter and and the plug that adapts to the engine harness or find a 89 and up foxbody harness which will already have the mass air plug made into it, the main rwason i didnt do it is because by the time i swapped the cv motor around to mass air and swapped pistons for a more aggressive cam id have more money into upgrading for the power im wanting so if you dont care about power speed density would be ok for you and id say jump on it
