F-250 4x4/Dana 60 Spring Perch Angle

Post by Eric46 »

I have a Dana 60 HD from a 76 F-250 that I am putting in my 70 F-250 4x4 and need to relocate the spring perches. Looking for the angle they should be mounted at relative to the machined face on the back of the housing where the back cover goes.

Thanks

You want it the same as the one that came out of your truck,When I did mine 20+ years ago I started with the old one secured to saw horses with the machined surface at 90* then recorded the angle of the spring perches.Next I secured the new on to the saw horses with the machined surfaces again at 90* and located the new spring perches at the same angle and correct spacing clamped them down and tacked them in place then rechecked their alignment/spacing then burned it in real good..... :2cents:

Unless you convert to a CV joint rear driveshaft, the rear diff and tcase or trans outputs should sit level with each other at a stand still. If you often run loads more than run empty, I put an average weight in the back and set the truck on the spring pads on the axle tube to find level and tack them in place.

T case and motor are at the same angle higher in front the front dif is tilted back and the rear dif is pointed up in front.
When I set the 4BT in mine the T case/difs were left in the factory positions and the motor/trans was aligned to the T cases orientation side to side and tilted to the rear 30,000 miles so far 0 issues when doing this the truck frame was on stands front and rear so that it was rigid and not affected by the weight changes I leveled it side to side but did not worry about front to rear as it didn't really matter as long as it didn't change during the whole process so long as the motor/trans and T case were on the same center line. With the 203/205 my intermediate shaft is only 11.375" long so the alignment needed to be on the money for reliability.

Here is a link to the Dana/Spicer drive line installation manual in PDF this will give you the working tolerances to get you going.
http://www2.dana.com/pdf/DSIG-3311.pdf
I have the Ford factory F series manual with all the angles in it,but when i was doing mine I wasn't sure where to check the initial angle to set "0" so as I knew the T case was correct as I had just replaced the T case bushings I used it as my "0" and worked in both directions from it.
If you want the angles from the Ford manual let me know and I will post them

Steve,

Thanks. I have two Dana 60s (from Fords) each with a different angle as measured off the machined face. One is 12 deg and the other is 14 deg. Any thoughts on the different angles?
