Purchased a remaned starter from napa and the mounting holes on the starter are 3/8 and the bell housing is 5/16? Is there a diferent starter or do i need to enlarge my 5/16 to 3/8?

The starter should locate in the dust shield/ front cover.
A little slop around the bolt holes shouldn't matter.

What engine do you have?

2 bolt or 3 bolt starter? If 2 bolt and the bell has 3 holes, you have the wrong starter.

390 w/ C6 (according to references found here), 3 bolt starter.

I solved the problem. I went to my local Tacoma Screw fastener shop and picked up three 5/16-18 thread, 3/8 x 3/8 shoulder bolts. Starter is snug as a bug. The gaps probably wouldn't have been a big deal but over time i felt that the ability for the starter to walk around in its housing could wear the teeth faster.

If you have the block plate the starter will not move away or towards the ring gear
