Transmission swap

Post by travis6370 »

First of all my 69 F250 has a 78 302 with some mild mods mated to a C4 transmission. I'm looking to get an overdrive for highway cruising without screaming at 2500 rpm. Is there a good OD transmission I can swap in and still be able to use my current column shifter? I've looked at the Gear vendors under/overdrive but it's kind of out of my price range. Any other suggestions? Thanks

Super easy bud, look for a 1992 or 1993 F150 truck with a 302 and AOD Combo. You will be able to tell by the shift pattern. It will be P-R-N-OD-D-1. They are not computer controlled, you just need the throttle valve cable and some carb adaptors. This will be easier if you have a holley or edelbrock 4v carb.

I forgot this in my last post, You will need to go to an auto parts store, and get the flexplate for the 1992 or 93 F150 and aod combo. Also jegs or similar catalogue will have the linkage correctors for the AOD and Holley or Edelbrock carb. Then you're golden. 8)

oh and one more thing I just used a lable maker to put OD over the original D and D over the 2 on the shift column. And not to fear you can still shift out of d to the one at speed and it will shift to second and not to first for engine braking. The governor in the trans wont let it go straight to 1. I was worried about that too but asked my transmission guy and then tried it, no probs.
Oh also the 92-93 AOD are the strongest is why I say those 2 years. And they have what equates to a freeze plug where the Speedometer hooks in, so you can either remove that or see if you can find an earlier model trans and swap tailshaft housings. The last thing I can think of is my transmission guy had an older model AOD and swapped the part in for the rod shifter in because the 92-93 ones had a cable shifter. Then everything will go swimmingly as they say.

Anyways hope my posts help you some :)

One more thing I can think of, I had to shorten my front drive line around 3" going from a c6 to the aod.

Isn't the ZF a std trans? If not, then did it come from a Jag XJS with 5.0L?

PS: People aren't here 24-7 and some are busy with Polly Ticks or life!
