67 f100 water cooled transmission.

It needs rebuilt, so I figured I'd change it to a c6. Are the splines and transmission length the same. I've also got a 2000 5.0 I thought about mating with a c4 or c6 and dropping that in instead. Any thoughts?

I say this a lot, we need more information. Most if not all automatic transmissions pump fluid through the radiator to cool it. What size motor do you have now? What is your skill level? With a late model small block you might consider an AOD if you have the fab and electrical skills to do it. And as always pictures make things easier both for you and us. Mixed answer on length. At least with the C6, you had (at least) two lengths. There was a "stubby" output shaft, in a stubby housing, and a long output shaft, in a long housing. The good thing is, the trannies themselves are the same. I have a stubby, that needs a rebuild, and a long output shaft and housing, so I'll convert during the rebuild. I could probably keep the stubby, if I had access to a longer driveshaft, but it's easier for me to put in the longer output shaft.

This is a late 67 model that has a 390 with the heavy duty water cooled tranny. Its a long bed with the carrier bearing. I've heard a lot about mating an AOD to a 5.0, but I'm not familiar with what electrical connections needed. I'm not worried about my skill level, this isn't my first engine and tranny pull, but it would be my first upgrade. I've always tried to keep original numbers and equipment in all my older vehicles. This is a work truck, but also want it looking and running good. The 5.0 I have is a fuel injected engine that I'll switch to carb, if I decide to go that route. What about gear ratios with an AOD to the rear end? This 390 has about 30,000 on a rebuild, is strong and doesn't leak or smoke, but I think about a little better gas mileage with a 5.0. I'm trying to decide which way would be best in the long run, I don't plan on ever getting rid of my find.

The AOD and a 302 will need some rear gear as the 390 would not. The 302 will get better fuel mileage. I would shoot for 3.89 if your rear tire size is 29" or taller. Your RPM's should end up 2400"ish at 65mph. There are gear calculator's out there to help you out. The best fuel mileage is going to come out of a manual transmission with an overdrive as it takes less to turn it.

The transmission he is talking about has the trans cooler down by the case of the trans and is a cruiseomatic

Steel water lines run down to the cooler
