Borg Warner 3 Speed Not Shifting into OD

Post by babybull1 »

Hey all.

I have a 1959 Studebaker Lark with a Borg Warner Transmission which recently stopped working in OD. Was cruising down the highway at about 60 mph, after coming to a slight uphill grade kicked it down into direct drive in 3rd, heard strange noises (metallic???) coming from the tranny, and then subsequently, it would not go into OD.

I've checked the relay and solenoid, both seem to be activating (I grounded the solenoid to the battery with a switch in the passenger compartment...can hear them each activating but still no OD).

Any thoughts?

Thanks

If these guys don't know, I think they used similar on Ramblers back in the day (AMCs are one of the other fun times I have had with wheeled history)

search amc forum and it should come up.

Strange noises don't sound good. However, you might check the governor. If by chance something caused the driven gear to strip, or the governor locked up, it can't spin fast enough to send current for closing the circuit so the O/D will engage. If not the governor, you may have some serious
gear thrashing.
