Axles don't match the rearend

Post by Donk »

I'm hoping someone can help me out here.
I recently bought my first hotrod. 46 Plymouth
The tag on the diff says it's a 9" from a 69-71 F100
I'm trying to put new brakes and shoes on it but the corresponding drums and shoes don't match up
It has 1.75" pads on an 11" inside diameter drum with 5x4.5" bolt pattern.
I've attached a couple of pictures of the tag on the rearend and the end of one of the axles.
Can somebody help me out here? Like I said, I'm new to all of this

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ah, the joys of an undocumented hot rod. Possibly the builder installed Galaxy parts on the truck axle. I honestly have no idea what the differences are. You should be able to visit a decent Napa and work with them through the old books and find correct parts via the drum pad thickness and diameter. Heavier duty brakes used wider parts.

Gonna be fun, good luck.

The tag does not go on the pinion support like yours is .Looks like some one kept the tag to remind them what gears are in the vehicle.Take the old shoes to a real parts house and they should be able to match them up for you.

Where would the tag normally be? There is no rear cover

Normally, the tag is on one of the bolts that hold the 3rd member into the housing, not out there on the pinion housing base.

If the tag is correct, looks like it may be:

Code Application Gear Dia N or NL Spline
WFE-C Ford F100 Pickup '69-71 3.50 9 in L 28

http://www.fordification.com/tech/rearends_ford07.htm

If that's true, you might actually have a Limited Slip differential. Congrats!

Traction loc rear ends are known as snow locks around here

Put them in a real heavy pull and they will revert to single wheel

500 HP and 12 inch wide tires bear witness to that

Without pulling the rear end apart is there anyway I can tell if the tag is accurate?

Also, thank you all for the help. Once I get this car figured out this should be fun.
I know it's not a Ford but it has Ford parts

Jack the rear up and rotate the driveshaft while watching the tires turn. If the tag is correct you should get 3.5 turns on the driveshaft per revolution of the tire and both tires should be tied together. If it's an open rear, one tire will spin forward as the other is spun backwards.

If the tag does indeed go with the 3rd member, it was assembled the 3rd week of May, 1969. I'm not certain where that actually falls in whether this is a '69 model year 3rd member or if it's a '70 model year component.

The first limited slip produced by Ford was the Equa-Lok (1957-1968). This differential wasn't a good unit for high torque or for pulling heavy loads and was never installed in the F100 Ford trucks.

In 1969, Ford revised the limited slip differential to produce the much improved Traction-Lok differential. However, the '69 Traction-Lok is the weakest year model design of this differential, due to 4 large holes in the casting on the left half of the differential, which is prone to breakage in this area. In 1970 ('70-'86), the Traction-Lok casting was made solid on the left side and greatly increased its strength in this area.
