Hey there, I've got a basket case 428SCJ block, pistons, crank only 6 good rods (2 bent) up for sale...MAYBE
What I mean is that this is a true Super Cobra Jet block with the proper markings and all
Bored .060 over sonic tested and has "more meat on the cylinders than most std bore 390's" according to my machinist
I was going to build it and stuff it into my 71 F250 but started to realize that these engines are rare.
Is there any interest in this? Should I just build it and stuff it in the F250?
Thanks
428 SCJ Engine

Re: 428 SCJ Engine
IF It's legit, save it or sell to an FE enthusiast who needs a period correct block.
Build a scat stroker 360/390 with minimum bore as possible, maybe .030 over and you'll be happier with performance.

Re: 428 SCJ Engine
The SCJ block isn't anything that special, just a CJ block, and at .060 over, if ready to go, I would guess max 500-600 bucks for the block alone unless it has a date code someone needs for a resto, then maybe higher.
To be an SCJ, you need a 1UA crank, that can bring some good money, but check your numbers, if its a 1U or a 1UB, its a CJ/standard 428 crank. Still some value, likely 400 bucks if able to go .010/.010, lower if it needs to be cut more. Also a real SCJ will need a special crank spacer behind the balancer, if you don't have it, they are expensive and harder to balance without it.
Same for the rods, if you have capscrew rods, they bring decent money, even though you have two bad ones. Hard to guess, because condition matters but I would expect 400 more. If they are C7AE-B rods, AND they have the big nuts (check with a 14 vs 15 mm socket) they will bring decent money, but they are CJ not SCJ, if they are C7AE-B with 3/8 bolts (9/16 head or 14 mm to compare to the last one) then they are just garden variety 390/428 rods and worth 100 bucks for a set of 8
Should you build it? Well, let's say you have all good stuff, at 1 hp per cid. A 390 makes 390 hp, a 428 makes 428 hp, and a 445 makes 445. I would sit down and see what you have, and run some numbers. If rebuilding the 428 for 40 more hp is worth the money, then consider the cost of selling the parts and building a 445 and compare. Most of us sell off the resto stuff to the resto guys and make more power for the same price
