I have started to daily drive my 71 - F250 Camper Special but like many threads here I see I want to be more cruising friendly. Lower RPM better gas mileage. I sometimes will drive it 6 hours round trip.
460 - C6auto - 3.73 Dana 60 rear end
Gear Vendors wants $3800 Canadian
Tremec wants over $5000 Canadian
I am told that there is an auto transmission from the 80's that has OD that may work!
Is there such an option? If so what should I be looking for in salvage yard and will it bolt to a 460?
Thanks

So I know that you can adapt an AOD to a 460 by using a Lentech or JW adapter. AOD's are still readily available and you can build one to hold some power. Another choice would be the E40D as it has a 0.71 overdrive but from what I hear it is heavy and would require a controller as it is electronically shifted. I did a little digging and found this thread over on 460Ford.com. Buddy of mine had a 460 in his Fox Body Mustang so I text him and he sent me to that site.

The AOD is smaller and weighs less so that may make it more appealing and you may not have to do any tunnel work to get it to fit being our trucks will take a C6. One of the guys on the thread wend from a C6 to an E40D to a ZF 5-speed manual and should have skipped the E40D. If you are a manual guy then you might want to take a look at that route.

Re: What other options other than C-6 auto
I put an AOD in my 1970 F100. I cannot comment on technicals since I only did the research and purchase and my mechanic did the install but it makes a huge difference for highway cruising. There are only three forward positions so the stock gear selector matches perfectly. We did need to shorten the driveshaft and I bought the Lokar TV cables but no other mods required. Mated to a crate Boss 302 not 460. 2200 stall converter. Hope that helps a bit.

I'm running an e4od . The computer costs around $550. That is well worth it. Your main expense is building a transmission with all the updates. Ideally you want a 95 or 96 trans which I think is the last year for 460 bellhousing. You will have to swap output shaft with earlier one to get speedometer output, as those years used one at ring gear instead. Total cost of swap with me doing the build was $1500-$2000.

Awesome thanks for the info - that is the kind of information I was looking for.
