Removing body side molding from 71 XLT

Post by Skkzhg »

What is the easiest way to remove the chrome molding on my 71 XLT? It has the wide trim with wood grain. I have a new set to install with clips.

remove the nuts at the ends and work the trim off the plastic clips with a removal tool. PITA...

For the box there should be a hole with a plug in the front inner panel , so you can use a socket and extension ,
instead of reaching up inside .
I'm not sure of the size on your truck , but sometimes Ford used an 11/32 nut which is smaller than a 3/8

I’m dreading it because it appears to be difficult at best. The clips don’t appear to have the spring on them like the ones for the narrower trim.

What type/brand of tool do I need?

Will the chrome slide off the clips in either direction?

The chrome won't slide because the T bolts on the end are spring loaded. I remove those nuts, then push down while working the bottom lip loose, then twist the trim and lift while working the top lip loose. Just walk the dog at each spot until it comes off. The thinner 1.5" trims plastic clips are held on with welded rivet like bungs.

Does the narrow molding along the bottom of the truck remove the same way? Does it have bolted fasteners at the ends?

Thanks!

Post up some pictures f what you have. Should be able to find the answers in the current Dennis Carpenter catalog. It'll show which hardware goes where.

Bringing this back up...any tricks for putting the new trim back on, assuming all clips are in place? I’m replacing passenger side fender and door PCs.
