Bumpside & Dentside 4x4 Coil springs?

Post by JoshT »

I've read what is in the tech library and is posted from parts manuals about coil springs. The correct part numbers are not available as NOS or in the aftermarket. I can't find information about the stock parts either. Wandering about some spring specifications and interchangeability if available.

From what I can tell my truck, a 1968 F-100 4x4 with 360, came stock with spring part number C6TZ-5310-G. I have no idea if I still have the stock or lift springs were installed prior to my family's acquisition. If they are stock, how much they might have sagged over the years.

My stock springs are supposed to be C6TZ-5310-G with a 0.645" wire diameter. Free height?

Other "stock" part number is C6TZ-5310-D with a 0.620" wire diameter. Free height?

Also see a D2TZ-5310-N for '72 F-100 4x4. Can't find any specifications for this one.

I'd actually be more interested in aftermarket variable rate springs than stock replacements. There is limited selection listed for a 68-72 F-100 4x4. I actually find exactly one option on RockAuto, Husky P/N RV814, listed for 1966-1979 F-100 & F-150. I also see a Moog P/N CC814 listed for 1973-1979 F-100 and F-150. So will springs from a Bumpside fit in a Dentside?

If they'll fit I think I'll get a set of the Moog CC814 springs to install while I'm fixing the front suspension.

I see no reason a similarly equipped dent spring will not swap into a bump and be identical.

I had (and still have) a 71 F100 4x4, my father had a 76 and a 78. Initially I had Moog progressive (no idea part number, bought from NAPA in the late 80s). Those springs went from mine, to dad's 76 when I put a 2.5 inch Rancho lift, then they went to the 78 which was a shop truck when I went 4 inch softride and dad took my 2.5s. So same springs, three different years of vehicle across bumps and dents

If you are going for stock look, I would try to find a listing for a very similarly equipped dent for weight purposes and ride height.
71 F-100 SB 4x4, 461 FE, Edelbrock Pro-flo 4, 4 speed, 4 inch softride lift, all poly bushings, integral PS, most mods installed since the 80's
70 Mustang Sportsroof 489 FE, EFI, TKO-600 5 speed, 4.11s

I'll assume that the springs provided expected ride height when moved to later model trucks. Glad to hear first hand experience from someone swapping them around.

Not exactly wanting a stock look, just keeping the slight lift. Truck has what I think are stock springs a 2" body lift now and I want to keep that height. Want to remove the body lift and install ~2" lift springs eventually, but that's not going to happen until it's ready for paint and body which is years away at best.

The CC814 part number is for a Dent 4x4 with FE and long bed. My 68 is a 4x4 long bed with an FE, about as close a match as I think I'm likely to find.
