'90 F150 4x4 transmission issues

Post by sargentrs »

Once again I come to the most knowledgeable and experienced people I know with an off the wall question. Got a buddy with a '90 F150 4x4 4.9L with the E40D tranny. Speedo's going crazy which is causing the tranny to act up. Already replaced both the tranny and differential sensors with no joy. Took to a couple different shops and they say replace the transmission. Transmission was supposedly rebuilt when he bought the truck. We're going to replace the speedo cable but if that doesn't fix it, looking for alternatives. Also know it could be a TPS issue, tone ring, wiring, etc. Looking for a shade tree answer to a Master's degree problem to get him going better. He can drive it as is around town but a 40 mile trip to work is too much.

Can you bypass the sensors and the transmission shift properly?
Can you swap to a mechanical speedo?
What other tranny/transfer case will bolt up to the 4.9L?
Any other considerations?

He's willing to do just about anything if he can scavenge from a junk yard or jury rig it. He's a good friend with no money and needs a hand. Any ideas?
