swapping a c6 into a 1971 highboy

Post by jpiercef »

i have a donor 360 and a c6 that i wish to swap into my highboy project that currently has no transmission. i am wondering if the c6 is too long to use; not sure if a shorter tail shaft is needed or if i can just get a shorter driveshaft to go between the trans and the divorced transfer case.

Is the original tranny still bolted up? If so, easy to measure from the back of the FE to the back of the OEM tranny.
Regardless...it's a given it won't be exactly the same, (it will be longer) and you'll have to shorten the driveshaft between the tranny and divorced transfer case. I'd start sourcing your options locally on driveshaft shops, (which there are fewer and fewer these days).

And for the record, my C-6/302 I dropped into BC#16 was tight at the back of the "bell" to firewall clearance wise.

Hopefully someone else can chime in here that has the FE/C-6 combo.

You could switch to a married transfer case on your c6

Def if it were mine! But the NP 205 "married" is the desired TC and getting harder to find.

Currently looking at doing the exact same thing. Thinking it would be as simple as putting a really short drive shaft between the transmission and TC. Also, kind of off topic, but it looks like we will both be looking for an angled oil filter adapter as well as a oil pan thats specific to the 4x4 FEs.

depending on how much lift you have , you might get away with a front sump pan.

wait, what? this is new information to me. the 4x4 chassis i bought has the original engine with it. I'll just be able to use the oil pan and the filter off of that, right? i had no idea those two things would even be an issue to begin with.

That should be fine , 4X4 usually need a rear sump pan to clear the front axle unless you have enough lift.
cars and 2wd have a front sump pan.
