Coil springs

Post by timmytim »

What is the proper way to remove front coil springs at a pull a part...I normally use a spring compressor tool or a floor jack to slowly let it down. Pull a part don't let me bring in jacks.

Like CEP said above, I can remember using ratchet straps years ago for safety, (can't remember if I ever tried compressing them using ratchet straps or not)? :hmm:

Any chance you might find a scissor jack in one of the other vehicles? I dropped the front springs out of a Firebird once using a jack from a Eagle Talon and a bicycle cable with its padlock. The chain idea is better but I used what I had in the trunk. Do they want to rent you a jack? My days of dropping a transmission onto my chest are long past. I know I have seen a cherry picker pulling a motor at one of the local you-pull-it places but that was a while ago.

The pick a part I frequent leaves vehicles up on home-made stands of steel wheels welded together so everything is extended. I just knocked bottom shock bolts out and then unbolt the top. Then deal with the long bolt thru the i-beam. Be sure to keep the perch on top of i-beam. They are hard to locate separately. :D
