Sandor ac compressor replacement?

Post by Woodhouse »

Hello all. I currently have a R134 Sandor AC compressor(system upgraded by previous owner) and it's putting out cold ac when on, but is clicking, and the clutch is slowly rotating when the ac is not on or engaged. Is this a bad clutch? Or compressor? How difficult is it to DIY replace or fix?

Thanks, W.

A small amount of rotation is normal, just the drag within the clutch. When the heater is in defrost, the clutch will briefly engage from time to time to keep the pump lubricated, try turning the heater to off, and see if the clicking stops.

I re-read my answer, and want to clarify. A very small amount of run on is okay, but the compressor should not be rotating continuously. Really, the only way to check is to take the belt off and rotate the pully by hand, if it is rough or lumpy or if it takes a fair effort to turn, consider changing it.

Ok. How difficult to replace the compressor? It does not turn easily--and I believe it is leaking. Which compressor, and any ideas where to source?

thx!
