question asked at the "other" ford site..deleted T
Well, I will ask it here then...maybe it will get answered!
I am looking at a truck that is 1750 miles away from me in Seattle Washington. I am in Central Iowa. The elevation changes dramatically between here and there. I was concerned with driving the truck that far through the significantly changing elevation...
If I have nothing to worry about ( other than snow storms, avalanches...etc ) that is great. Just don't delete my post like www.ford-schmucks.com!

I sure wouldn't worry about it at all... I've done that many times, so you should be just fine.

I wouldn't worry the elevation changes either. They're not going to make a significant different in the engine's performance for that short haul. You'll probably want to re-calibrate it for optimal performance/mileage when you get it home, but for the drive to Iowa it'll be fine.

Above 5000 ft (as compared to 0-500 ft) advance timing a few degrees and lean out fuel- do google search(engine timing adjustments at high altitudes) JD

Nothing tickes me off more than posting something that I see as being completly legit....only to go back later to see it is gone. I have been off of the Ford sites for a while now, since my project is somewhat on hold for the winter months. Man, it is -9F here today. Not my idea of a great day to go to the garage. Even with heat out there, it still stinks. But now that I am in the market for another older truck I have a bunch of questions to ask once again.
Anyway, the truck I am looking at is a 77.....not quite in the age range of this site, but I am sure most of the topics still apply...and I bet a good majority of the people who post here know plenty about the 73-79 model year trucks.

I still go there and see what's posted from time to time, but spend more time in the 48-60 and 61-66 forums. The questions in the older truck forums seem more varied and intelligent, plus the moderators a little more relaxed.

You gotta remember, they get paid every time a banner ad gets flashed in your face. You don't have to do anything but GO there and they're getting kickbacks from all the ads they're forcing you to download and stare at. I take mine up high elevations often. It will run a bit rich, but its nothing to be concerned with.

Looks like I will be buying the truck in LA CA...nicer looking truck...very clean. I liked the thought of the OD in the truck in WA. Oh well...MORE GAS $$$ PLEASE!

Some advice from an old trucker (the semi type):
Stay off I-70 through the Rocky Mountains.
At this time of year from Iowa I would take I-35 south into Oklahoma and pick up I-40. Take I-40 west into California and pick up I-15, then take I-15 south to I-10, then run I-10 into LA.
You could run I-80 out to Denver, then pick up I-25 south into New Mexico to pick up I-40, but then you have to go over Raton pass and it's not always so great at this time of year. You're still gonna have some grades in New Mexico and Arizona, but nothing bad.
