Mirror Mount Holes?

Post by MAK »

I was hoping someone could help identify some extra holes on the leading edge of both doors of my 72. They are a couple inches apart and aligned vertically with smooth bolt heads covering the holes. The mirrors are the same ones that were on it when my grandfather purchased it at about a year old. I haven't noticed these in any photos I've seen but haven't spent hours looking. Can anyone shed some light?
Link to a pic is below. Note red circle and you can zoom in as the pic is high res. Thanks for any help. Mark

Those are for the support arm of the Camper Special mirrors. Looks like somebody's removed them at some point and just filled the holes with carriage bolts.

Hi Mark,

Somebody changed your mirrors during the 1st year. What you should of had are the long arm western mirrors with the diagonal brace. You have the short arm swing-away versions and somebody blanked out the extra holes in the doors.

Edit: Man that Keith is fast, and a pic too

Geeze you guys are fast! I never noticed those extra braces in the pics I have seen. Did both the short arm and long arm versions use a diagonal brace or just the log arm? When you say someone changed them out do you mean from the long-arm version or from an entirely different model? Thanks a lot for the quick response and help!:woohoo:

Somebody's taken the long arm mirrors off and replaced them with the short arm mirrors. They're the same height, so they'd use the same top and bottom holes. But since they didn't use the additional brace, the holes for it got covered up on your truck.

(ok, Keith's offline so I think I can post this without getting stepped on)

Mark, only the long arm version had the additional brace. The short ones like you have are designed to swing away (fold in) if you hit something. Both styles were optional on your truck but usually I see swing aways, long arms were included on the Camper Specials.

Edit: Damn!

How much further did the long arm version stick out?

So what do you do when the wife backs the truck out of the garage and rips the mirror clean off of the door? HAHAHA
