Speedo Cable

Post by 2ToneBeater »

Ok, so I decided to take and clean up my gauges. Removed everything easy enough..... Does anyone have advice on an easy way to get the speedo cable nut back on. The actual cable will attach but I can't get the damn thing to thread. Any advice would be awesome is there is any....

You mean you unscrewed the cable from the back of the instrument panel and now you can't get it back on? Seems to me it's just a matter of proper alignment of the cable end to the speedo head. Trying to do this by reaching up under the dash might make it more difficult...why not trying reattaching it to the instrument panel before actually installing the panel, so you have a better angle to get to things?

Thanks....

I am just a bit leary about pulling on the cable because I don't want to snap the plastic inside cable. I will try to wrestle this alligator again tomorrow.

As Keth mentioned, there is usually some slack in the cable so you can give it a pull and you might end up with enough to thread it on before setting the instrument panel. If not, you can always reach up under there, thread your mitt through all that wire and miraculously thread the nut onto the speedometer. Sometimes I get it right away; other times it takes a few tries. Look upon it as a character building experience!

For future reference, if nothing else works, and you find yourself too hamfisted to get your fingers in there in a tight work space, take the speedo cable out of the transmission and that will give you plenty of slack. Just make sure to put it back in before you drive off!

don't ask me how I know this :hmm:

The fun is in getting to create all kinds of new cuss words when you smell something burning, and look under the truck to realize your speedo cable is laying on a hot exhaust pipe.
