No about the filing down the keys, The tumblers work in such a fashion that the bottom tumblers fit the cut of the key keeping them level with the top tumblers, thus allowing the lock cylinder to turn. If the keys are filed down it allows the top tumblers to drop down to make up the difference in tumbler height thus locking the cylinder. there are two tumblers of different size and a spring in each pin, 7 or 5. The combinations can be almost infinite. Fortunately Ford only used around 175 tumbler combinations and certain years of trucks only had a certain number of them. The hardest years to find keys for are the 76 to 77 trucks. I have a lot of lock sets for the 67 to 75 and the 78 to 79 but very few for the 76 to 77 as for some reason out of the 400 + keys I have none of them seem to fit those year locks.

wow so i guess every 176th key code used might have matched the first key code?

that would be wierd to have two trucks keyed alike.

All my trucks are keyed alike. I had misgivings about doing it but I don't have to fish through a bunch of keys in the dark to find the right one anymore!

The truck in the picture is a 71 with a 70 grille in it. I have 4 trucks of 67 to 72 vintage and 2 66's one is a 4x4 and the other a one ton flat bed F350. Been trying to get a photo bucket gallery up and add them to my profile but have been unsuccesful at it and ran out of patience!

I used to service cars & trucks (kind of an old mom & pop jiffy-lube but with a more personal, friendly feel) and believe it or not, I had just changed the oil in a Ford truck and an LTD. The lady came in for her LTD and I handed her a set of keys. She said, "those aren't my keys" to which I replied, "are you sure? I just pulled it out and parked it with those keys." Sure enough, we went out with both sets and they each worked in the other vehicle! Crazy man. What are the odds of having them both in the shop on the same day and time?
